Make Your Resume Relevant To The Job
These days getting a job is harder than ever, because the number of jobs available has shrunk, and the number of applicants has grown. If you are hunting for a job right now, you are competing with a lot more people than you would compete with in a normal market. That's why your CV should give your employers the information they need in a precise, crisp, relevant manner. More than anything else, you need to hone your CV writing skills.
Relevance is the most important thing you should remember when you prepare your CV. The person who is scanning the CVs decides which candidates to call up for an interview and probably gives each resume about a minute, after that it either goes into the file, or the bin depending on whether it was successful in capturing the attention of the employer or not. So it's time you learnt a little more about CV writing and removed the problems in your CV.
The most common mistake in the CV is irrelevant information. If you are applying for the post of an accounts clerk, your employer surely is not interested in your history with football, so why list all your football achievements and awards? ...
... That is the biggest mistake made by an amateur who doesn't know CV writing. Provide only relevant information about your professional career, education and skills. If you need to mention your extra achievements, do that in the footnote and in one line.
Never be verbose in your CV, and never put in irrelevant personal information about your family and your life. If they need to know anything, they will ask you for it. Actually, it is within your rights not to reveal any information about your family even if you are asked, though in practicality if you refuse to answer simple questions, your resume will be sent to the bin very fast. That's a CV writing secret you don't get told very often.
To really increase your chances of getting the desired job, you need to tailor your CV around it. Once you have a fantastic CV format you need to focus on the CV content. Find out what the employer needs, then look for your traits and skills that meet the needs of the employer. Now highlight this information in your CV. Although preparing a custom CV for each job sounds like hard work, it's not very hard cause all you need to do is make a few modifications, and since you are out of a job anyway, you can spend your free time in CV writing.
Relevant information also includes your professional experience, your education, your skillset and any specialised courses that you might have done. The aim of the CV is to tell your employer why you would be the best choice for the job. That's the aim of CV writing, so do not convince yourself that it is so that the employer wants to know you better.
If you've worked in any companies or jobs which match the employer's profile, then highlight them, and put in a little more detail about your work experience there in your CV. Remember to mention your job responsibilities and your achievements, and not just what your job title there was.
Being relevant is the most important thing in CV writing. Relevance will get you more interviews. So be relevant, and prepare a great CV.
