Many individuals and companies have gotten their reputation damaged by an Internet posting. Internet defamation occurs when a false statement is made that injures the reputation of a person. There are many countries like the United States that offers its citizens the freedom of speech. But many people take this to mean that they can say whatever they want and to whomever they want. When this freedom is misused on a public domain like the Internet, it damages the reputation of people. The wronged party is then perfectly within their rights to seek arbitration and compensation.
Sometimes Internet defamation is done on certain known sites. If a person is wrongly accused in a post, then they should challenge it. The process to remove post is quite simple. Normally a complaint form is required to be filled up. Identifying information should be given about the comment as well as the contact information of the person who wrote it. ...
... The reason for removing the comment should also be specified in the complaint form. Once the complaint has been filed the person who wrote the comment is notified. Proof will be asked of him as to why he wrote the content and what the evidence behind its validity is. The person who wrote the content has seven days to respond to the Internet defamation charge. In case the writer does not respond to the notification, it is taken as proof that the complainant is correct and the content has no truth in it. The website that put up the content is then asked to delete post. If the content has been published on other websites, they will be asked to remove the content as well.
There are times when the writer insists that what he wrote was correct. He does not comply with the decision to bring down the content. In such cases both the parties are forced to seek arbitration. These cases are normally taken to a third party who is neutral and is capable of giving a just and fair judgment. The adjudicating party looks at the evidence submitted by both sides, looks into their respective positions and examines the merits of their claims. The decision made by the adjudicating party is communicated to both sides. It is important to note that this judgment is made solely on the written evidence provided by both parties. At no point in the case are either of the two sides allowed to talk to the arbitrator. There are also no witnesses provided during the course of the proceedings.
Internet defamation is quite serious. More than communicating in real life, people these days are constantly on the web. It is rapidly becoming the first source of information for many people. What they read on the Internet, many people hold it to be true. That is why when somebody writes something wrong on any website, it should be challenged immediately. Many reputations have been spoiled because of incorrect information.
