Saved By The Skin Of Your Teeth

Why do so many people take their teeth for granted? Not only are healthy teeth essential for the eating process but they also contribute to the attractiveness of a smile and the aesthetic appeal of the face in general. While teeth may be covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body, beneath the unforgiving façade lies a soft centre which once exposed can lead to all sorts of oral-centred complications if not dealt with promptly.
Inside your teeth is a cavity filled with pulp, which is made up of connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerve fibres, help supply nutrients to your teeth. The pulp cavity extends into the root of your teeth, forming the root canal. A cracked tooth, can allow bacteria to infiltrate this soft centre and attack the roots. I have a personal perspective on this subject because I’m a sucker for pork scratchings and have cracked a few molars of my own while eating these rock hard snacks. Unfortunately, these cracks took me an age to address and now I have an infected root. My name’s Andrew and I have taken my teeth for granted.
Although teeth do not necessarily get more brittle ...
... with age, engagement in the everyday process of eating can take its toll. This tearing, munching and chewing of food, especially if your diet includes a high incidence of sugary and starchy snacks (donuts anyone?), can leave teeth vulnerable to attack. I have to admit to possessing a sweet tooth but always felt reassured that my twice daily tooth-brushing routine protected my teeth from enamel eroding acid which is subsequently produced each and every time food is eaten.
Although sugary foods are an obvious scapegoat as a cause of tooth decay, starchy foods can be as bad if not worse than sugar-based snacks. After eating these types of foods carbohydrates can ferment, causing the bacteria in the mouth to produce acids that will quickly eat away at the enamel of teeth before you can say ‘gum disease’. In my case, a weakness for pork scratchings was matched by the inherent fault lines of amalgam filled molars that were always more liable to crack under pressure.
Luckily for me, endodontics is a dental treatment that can save teeth from a slow death. The purpose of endodontics or root canal therapy is to cleanse the infected pulp chamber and root canals, then place an inert, bio-compatible filling to bridge the gap and prevent further infection. Endodontics is a safe and efficient method of treatment for teeth that stops decay before it reaches a tooth’s supporting bone tissues.
Our teeth are precious but it’s understandable that sometimes we would rather look the other way when they need attention. Endodontics is a therapy that can pull back your teeth from the brink even if you may have given up on them.
