Unlike other bones in our body, human teeth are constantly exposed. This also means that that they are more prone to staining and damage. Incorrect or lack of dental care can make matters worse and before you know it, you will be the victim of tooth decay and deteriorating gum conditions. In some cases, teeth damage is so extensive that the only option is to have them replaced. This is where dental implants come into the picture. These should not be confused with partial or complete dentures as they are affixed permanently, unlike the former.

Dental implants Austin are used as a foundation or a base for fixing replacement tooth/teeth. There are four varieties of implants- root, plate, Subperiosteal and Intramucosal. The root form dental implants are used when the jaw bone is in a considerably good condition and its depth and width are enough to accommodate the implant. These are called “screw type” implants. The titanium implant is fitted into the jawbone just as a screw is fitted into a piece of wood. The procedure involves exposing the jawbone, setting the implant in place and then stitching up the surrounding ...
... gum tissue.

The plate form dental implants Austin are similar to the root form ones. However, these are used when the jaw bone is too narrow to accommodate a root implant and grafting is not possible. This is a flat and long implant and can be fitted on a narrow jawbone. An incision in made in the gum tissue, the plate is inserted and the tissue is re-stitched. Once it has healed the replacement tooth/teeth are affixed to the plate. This too has a healing period similar to that of a root implant and is as long-lasting as the latter. Dentists will generally use this method when the condition of the jawbone is not as it should be.

Subperiosteal implants are fitted on top of the jawbone just under the surface of the gums. This implant method is used for people who have an advanced level of bone loss. Less bone structure means that a root or a plate cannot be firmly fitted on the bone. Most dentists will conduct this surgery in two phases. One is to create the actual mould and the second is to set the implant in place. Sometimes both these procedures can be carried-out simultaneously. In this case, a CAT Scan is taken, the mould is made and the implant is set in place at the same time.

Intramucosal inserts are not really implants in the true sense of the word. They are dental insets. They are used in somewhat the same manner that implants are used in that they are the foundation for securing replacement teeth. They are used with large sets of false teeth such as dentures. These mushroom-shaped inserts are attached to the side of the denture that is aligned with the gums. They are fitted into indentations that are that are placed in the roof of your mouth cavity. Your dentist will gauge the condition of your teeth and gums before suggesting which implant will suit you best.
