Astringent A Skin Care Product
Astringent is one of those things that everyone has heard of, yet most people do not really know what it is. It's a shame really, because it is something that is beneficial to any skin care routine. Whether your skin is oily or dry, astringent can improve your complexion. Below you will find the answers to your most basic astringent questions.
What is astringent?
An astringent is something that draws soft tissue together. When used for skincare, one of the most important things an astringent (which is also called a toner) does is tighten the skin by constricting your pores. This will give you a more even skin tone and will also fight signs of aging, such as sagging skin and wrinkles. Astringents also cleanse the skin by neutralizing oils and removing leftover makeup. This helps to prevent blackheads and other blemishes. Astringents are also used to soothe irritated skin. Some people apply it after they have their eyebrows or lip waxed to promote healing.
There are a variety of astringents on the market. The gentlest ones are made from natural ingredients like chamomile, green tea, and witch hazel. There ...
... are also alcohol-based astringents. These are best for oily skin. Alcohol is drying and may be too harsh for sensitive or dry skin.
How and when do I use astringent?
You should think of an astringent as another step to your daily skin care routine. Each time you wash your face, which is ideally in the morning and at night, you should use astringent. First, you should wash your face with a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Steer clear of harsh, drying cleansers since you are going to add another cleansing step to your routine. Next, gently pat your face dry with a clean towel. Take a cotton ball and softly apply the astringent to your T-Zone (which is your forehead, nose and chin). This is the area that is most prone to breakouts and blemishes. You may also want to swipe it across your cheeks. Let the astringent dry and then apply a moisturizer. This last part is incredibly important, as astringents can be drying.
Is there anything else I should know?
If you start to notice too much dryness, there are a couple of questions you should ask yourself. First, are you applying moisturizer immediately after the astringent dries? If the answer is no, you should start to do that immediately. As touched on before, astringent can be drying. Remember that moisturizer should be an important part of any skincare routine. It keeps your skin hydrated and fights signs of aging.
If you have been using a moisturizer and your skin is still dry, think about how often you have been applying it. Are you using too much astringent? Try reducing the amount you use by gently dipping your cotton puff in the astringent. You may also want to reduce the number of times you use it per day.
If you've done both of these things and you still notice dryness, you should take a look at the type of astringent you are using. If it's alcohol-based, you may want to consider trying a gentler type, like one made from witch hazel.
Using an astringent is a simple way to really improve the look of your skin. It will keep it clean and fight off blemishes, while tightening your skin and giving it a fresh, healthy look. This simple extra step to your beauty routine will work wonders on your complexion!
