A service valve performs a very simple and basic function. It either allows or stops the flow of water and it features two different points of connection- One connecting the water supply and the other to the actual irrigation system. Pressing a lever lock or turning a handle opens the water-flow. The inside of the valve has a channel and turning the valve causes the plug, ball or disc to block that particular channel. Another variety is the check valve. This prevents the water in the irrigation system from flowing backward to its origination point. Fluctuations in the pressure of water can lead to a reverse-flow. A check valve cannot be adjusted, nor does it have a handle.

It offers a one-way point to the irrigation section of a system. The inside of the valve has a channel. As the water starts flowing from the supply side to the irrigation side the hinged disc or a ball floats freely inside this channel. If the water tries to push back from the irrigation side, the disc or the ball gets pushed back into position and wedges itself firmly at the mouth of the valve opening, thus preventing a back-flow. A pressure-relief valve is the guard of an irrigation system. It is like a watchdog that guards against any excessive pressure build-up.

Any pressure can damage pipes and change the watering rates and is a malady that affects many irrigation systems in rural areas, which are fed via wells. The spring that the body of the valve holds, is calibrated in such a manner that it responds to the minutest of changes in pressure levels. The spring contracts, opens the valve and then releases a portion of the water. A pressure-reducing valve adjusts the pressure of water that flows through the channel. Any high pressure from the supply side gets regulated and turns into a lower pressure on the irrigation side. In most cases, a mix-and-match of valves will be used in any irrigation system.
