Consider Buying Vs. Packing

Given how expensive it is to check luggage these days, if you want to keep your cheap fares really affordable, whether they are cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages, then there are often things that are cheaper to buy at your destination than to pack.

Not only do passengers have to pay fees to check luggage, those fees go up dramatically for oversized and/or overweight luggage.

The following are items Smarter Travel recommends purchasing at your destination vs. packing:

• T-shirts are usually sold by the bushel at destinations. If you don’t want to appear as a cheesy tourist, layer your souvenir shirts under sweaters or button down shirts. Souvenir tees are a great way to be reminded of your past trips after returning home.

• Books, magazines, and newspapers are often among the heaviest items that are packed. Instead consider traveling with an e-reader or purchase reading material at your destination.

• Instead of packing pajamas, visit a discount clothing store or a thrift shop at your destination and then donate or dispose of them before returning home.

• If ...
... you are staying at a place that does not offer complimentary mini toiletries, then purchase shampoo, mouthwash, and other products at your destination. Remember a bottle of basic shampoo can double as a makeshift laundry detergent.

• Do not pack bulky guidebooks. Either download guidebooks on your e-reader or purchase them from your hotel’s gift shop or at the airport.

• Free up some room in your carry-on by not packing snacks and instead purchase food at your terminal. Lots of airports have started offering healthy food options ranging from smoothies outposts to grab and go sandwich cafes. Usually your airport’s website will show you what is available.

• Instead of packing a clunky water bottle from home, purchase one at the airport after you have gone through security. Use it throughout your trip and recycle it on the day of your departure.
