Uranus is the third largest planet of the sun solar system. It is seventh closest to sun. The planet was discovered by Sir William Herschel in 1781. This is the first planet ever discovered using a telescope. Uranus and Neptune are considered twin planets due to their similarities in size and composition.

Uranus is about 14 times the size of earth and is the second least dense planet. The diameter of Uranus is four times the diameter of earth. Studies show that Uranus is made of ice, water, ammonia and methane.

Structure of Uranus consists of a rocky layer in the center, the middle layer consists of ice and the third layer is made of hydrogen and helium gas. Uranus and Neptune are classified as ice giants because the bulk of their composition is ice. Uranus is also considered to contain ionic water containing hydrogen and oxygen ions.

Heat generated: Uranus is not known to emit as much heat as Neptune emits. Therefore is said to have low thermal flux. The reason for low heat emission is not determined as yet.
