A firewall is a web protective system that lies between the computer network and the external internet. When installed, it prevents unauthorized access of spyware, virus, malware etc to a personal business network. The premium security system carefully analyzes data entering and exiting the network and restricts any threat that may hamper or break down business network.

A firewall appliance can be either be hardware or software:

A hardware firewall is an advance stand-alone product embedded in broadband routers, used to protect all the computers on a network from virus, spyware, and malware attacks. Generally, such security appliances have four network ports for computers connection, but for larger networks, business networking firewall solutions are used. These powerful security system uses packet filtering to examine the header of a packet and determining its source and destination. The retrieved information is compared to a set of predefined or user-created rules that checks the validity of the packets and then decide whether to forward it or not.

Today, the customized firewall security is an ideal ...
... solution for large businesses requiring a comprehensive network protection. These web safety tools are equipped with additional unmatched technologies like virtual private network (VPN) support, anti-virus, antispyware, content filtering, antispam etc. Nowadays organizations installs dedicated hardware firewalls embedded with advance safety tools to block threats at the periphery of the network. Thus, they easily filter emails, web contents and web traffic without having to slow down computer performance and managing bandwidth. The firewall can be easily managed, moved, shutdown, or reconfigured with minimal interference to the network.

In case of large companies where multiple servers are used for the hosting purpose, the hardware firewall is a good choice for network security. These advance firewall appliances able to handle the large traffic for different servers and can easily distinguish between which traffic is allowed to one server but not to another.
Software firewalls gives people the certain level of protection they need to keep them safe from hackers, spammers, trojans and other unwanted intrusions. These security programs are far easier for computer novices to customize and install in their PCs without requiring much technical assistance, hence suited best to home networks and small business.

These advance software firewall packages generally include antispam, antivirus and even anti-popup ad software. Some software firewalls also has parental controlling feature to manage what kinds of websites their children visit. These firewall allow parents to block photos and specific text content that they do not want their infants to view.

A software firewall is able to keep a close eye at malicious traffic and intercept it before it leaves the computer. As per the quality of the data, it can either allow or block the program. In case the security program not sure about the data nature, it prompt a confirmation from end-user end before allowing traffic to pass. Since, a software firewall can effect a machine processing, so it is advisable to use only reliable security programs that provide high safety against threats and use less system resource.

The only major drawback of these firewall security software are that they only protect the machine they get installed. Hence, one have to purchase multiple copies of software and configure them individually on each machine, in case to protect multiple computers on a same network. Today, there are many business oriented firewall programs that offers centralized installation and monitoring of computers.

It is hard to say which is better, a software firewall or hardware firewall as for best network protection both are used. Thus, updating the firewall as per operating system is essential for maintaining optimal protection against blended threats, and testing the internet security appliances to ensure it is connected and working correctly.
