Starting seeds at your seed house will definitely give you earlier vegetables, fruits and flowers and will also offer you endless choices to carry your outdoor innovations to another plane altogether. To be honest, the process of germination might seem complex however the whole task of seed planting is pleasurably simple. All you need to do is to take step by step approach in order to preside over healthy and thriving crop of seedlings.

First things first, select your work area to set up your seed house. Ideally a clean surface, closer to water supply is the right place to experiment with your seed gardening idea. Next important step , gather all your gardening equipment such as your seed starting containers, watering can, soil mix, marking pen, labels and last but not the least your quality seed packets.

All about choosing the seed container

Although you can start seeds in almost any container however it is always better to choose a seed pot which can hold 1 to 2 inches of starting medium and which won’t get waterlogged easily. Seeds germinate and grow best in containers that provide adequate space ...
... for root growth and have holes for water drainage. Sure, you can start seedlings either in individual sections or in group. Expert gardeners however recommend using individual containers, because the fact is undeniable that the less you touch or disturb the tender saplings, better it would be for the plant’s growth. Containers such as paper pots, peat pots or soil blocks can go right into the seed house while transplanting.

It has been proven scientifically that rectangular and square container offer more area for the roots to grow than the round ones.

All about potting mixes

Get it straight here, seeds contain adequate amount of nutrient which helps them in sprouting so your potting mix should not contain any nutrient enriched substance. The soil should be free of toxic substances, and should be able to hold moisture as well as provide adequate amount of air space. Stay away from using plain and simple garden soil for seedlings.

Here is a quick recipe for making your own seed-starting mix. Take one part vermiculite and mix it with one part of peat moss, sphagnum moss and coir. You can also some bagged seed-starting mix. Let the saplings grow in that mixture till their first true leaves develop and then transplant the plant into a nutrient-rich soil.

Well, it all depends on your home gardening idea and also on your outdoor innovations and proper planning. Here is a quick tip for sowing seeds – if you are sowing just a few seeds then it is a good idea to use your fingertips or may be your tweezers for placing them precisely. However, in order to sprinkle seeds rather evenly here are few cool methods to mull over.

Take few seeds between your thumb and index finger and rotate your thumb over the finger very slowly. Now move your hand over the container while gradually releasing the seeds

You can also scatter seeds with a deep spoon or else you can sow seeds directly while tapping the seed packet slowly and gently for making the seeds drops one after the other.

Keep this sowing timetable handy
