Solving problems for riddles:


Solved problem 1: Ariel bought 8 bags of marbles. Some of the bags contain 8 yellow marbles. The rest of the bags contain 9 brown marbles. Ariel bought 68 marbles in all. How many bags of each color marble did Ariel buy?

Solution:

Use guess-and-check to solve the problem. Guess pairs of numbers that add up to 8.

Case 1: 7 bags of yellow marbles and 1 ...

Find the number of bags of marbles: 7 + 1 = 8

Find the total number of marbles: (8 × 7) + (9 × 1) = 56 + 9 = 65

The guess is incorrect.

Case 2: 1 bag of yellow marbles and 7 bags of brown marbles

Find the number of bags of marbles: 1 + 7 = 8

Find the total number of marbles: (8 × 1) + (9 × 7) = 8 + 63 = 71

The guess is incorrect.

Case 3: 4 bags of yellow marbles and 4 bags of brown marbles

Find the number of bags of marbles: 4 + 4 = 8

Find the total number of marbles: (8 × 4) + (9 × 4) = 32 + 36 = 68

The guess is correct. Ariel bought 4 bags of yellow marbles and 4 bags of brown marbles.

Answer: Ariel bought 4 bags of yellow marbles and 4 bags of brown marbles.

Solved problem 2: Robert wrote fewer postcards than Joey but more postcards than William. Who wrote the fewest postcards?

Solution:

Use the story to put the names in order.

Robert wrote fewer postcards than Joey.

Robert wrote more postcards than William.

William wrote the fewest postcards.

Answer: William wrote the fewest postcards.

Practice problem 1: Dana bought lunch for her co-workers. Each person picked one. The hamburgers cost 3 dollars each and the chicken sandwiches cost 4 dollars each. If Dana spent 23 dollars and bought lunch for 6 people, how many of each item did she buy?

Practice problem 2: Kanesha took the train from Chesterton to Riverside. The train went 4 kilometers from Chesterton to Watertown. It was 17 kilometers from Salem to Riverside. How many kilometers was Kanesha's train ride?

Practice problem 3: Julie is delivering mattresses. She goes 1 mile south, 3 miles west, 3 miles north, and 3 miles east. Which direction must Julie go to get back to her starting point?

Solutions for riddles:

Solution 1: Dana bought 1 hamburger and 5 chicken sandwiches.

Solution 2: There is not enough information to solve this problem. We need to know how far it was from Watertown to Salem.

Solution 3: Julie must go south to get back to her starting point.
