How To Maintain A Strong And Safe Home Deck

When you had your house built, you always made it sure that it was built right. The same principle should be applied when you are constructing a deck. As much as possible, you would want your deck to be built strong and sturdy. According to experts, an average home deck can last up to 15 years, but you can extend the life of the deck you're going to build by remembering a few things right after construction. Keeping these things in mind will help you build a deck that's strong, safe, and pleasing to the eye.
Inspect Your Deck
Knowing that the deck you have just built may not be safe is the first step to making sure that it is actually safe. Many experts agree that a deck is one of the potentially dangerous areas of the house. For the past 14 years, nearly 900 injuries and 20 deaths due to deck failure have been reported. Many factors contribute to these failures, but the most common is the lack of proper maintenance. Once your deck is finished, check the entire construction for loose connections, loose bolts, cracks, and even rots. It's also ideal to consult a professional who can evaluate the safety of your deck.
Create ...
... a Continuous Load Path
Nothing fancy here. A continuous load path simply refers to the construction method where you create a succession of solid and strong connections within the makeup of your deck. With these connections, the weight that's placed upon your deck is transferred to the frame of the deck and onto the ground. With a continuous load path, your deck will have a higher chance of resisting force that can weaken and eventually damage it.
Consider the Weight
You didn't build your deck simply for display. Decks are built to accommodate guests, friends, and relatives, so make sure you your deck can get a beating. Ideally, your deck should be built in such a way that it can accommodate weight not just caused by gravity or downward pressure, but also by lateral weight (motion caused by wind, earthquake, or people walking on the deck), and uplift weight (motion caused by wind flowing from underneath the deck).
Watch Out for Corrosion
Corrosion is one of your deck's top enemies. Your deck is constantly exposed to heat, wind, and rain, causing metal connectors, nails, and screws to corrode over time. The process is hastened if wrong products are used. To make sure your deck withstands elements that can cause corrosion, only use high-quality products in building it. At the same time, use stainless nails, screws, and connectors, as they have higher resistance to corrosion.
Maintain Your Deck
Finally, make sure you apply regular maintenance to your deck. Inspect it every once in a while to see whether there are parts or areas that need fixing. It's also important to keep the deck clean at all times, especially since debris may cause damage to the boards, depending on what material you used.
