Toyota Avensis 2.2 - Litre 4d
Toyota Avensis 2.2 - Litre 4D
Few years ago, the sales of family cars was largely dominated by the business user, a car as sober as the Toyota Avensis was very trustworthy, efficient and practical. But now-a-days it's a different scenario altogether, customers are no longer willing to buy a transport that's hardly spacious and durable, they realized all their particular needs can be fulfilled in the shape of a SUV or a compact executive car. As for Toyota Avensis, the range comprises a saloon and Tourer, with a 1.8-litre valve matic petrol engine and a 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre D-4D diesel engines. The trim levels are also good running from T2 to TR, through T4 to top of the range T-Spirit.
When the new Avensis was in designing phase, programmer's chief engineer, Takashi Yamato drove 3,000 miles across the Europe gaining the feel of its culture while a team of 35 European engineers was dispatched to Japan to get an influence for the design, to increase the European look and feel of a car that has Japanese ambiance, came up as priorities of Toyota. The result then? Hmm. The Avensis has more European feel and look, ...
... but from the inside or out – the flair that runs through the cars like Vauxhall Insignia was left wanting. Lack of flair is one thing but the Avensis has some other problems also such as rotary heating controls are too shallow, the positioning and design of some auxiliary controls are less satisfactory, the mirror controls are nothing more than flat squares and the release of electric parking brake is hidden behind the steering wheel making it hard to view.
There are no doubts about the Avensis performance; the engine refinement is something that needs attention. Smoothness is ok however when the throttle is full engine reaches its peak torque and there's an obvious noise – part induction roar, part diesel rattle. Its ride is its biggest failing, it is combined with a nervousness over small, sharp ridges at low speed with inadequate body control over challenging road otherwise it is impressively compliant. Toyota Avensis offers petrol engines in a 1.8-litre VVTi T2 with 127bhp which produces 170Nm of torque, reaching 0-60mph in just 9.7 seconds. It has CO2 emissions of 171g/km and joined economy of 39mpg. The 1.8-litre VVTi T4 4D with 145bhp produces 196Nm of torque, does the 0-60mph sprint in just 8.8 seconds, emits191g/km of carbon, returns combined economy of 34mpg.
Whereas Toyota Avensis Diesel engines are offered in a 2.0-litre D-4D T2 with 114bhp which produces 280Nm of torque, reaching 0-60mph in just 11.0 seconds, CO2 emissions 155g/km, combined economy of 48mpg. A 2.0-litre D-4D T3 with 148bhp which produces 310Nm of torque, reaching 0-60mph in just 9.0 seconds, CO2 emissions 156g/km, combined economy of 47mpg. Rest of the Toyota's diesel engines are of same specification for rest of the line-up. The Avensis proves wholly satisfactory if you are looking for a car that will transport you reliably, quietly and safely. Place inside the car is spacious enough, level of equipment is decent and residual values are astoundingly good. Toyota had to spend some more time in making Avensis more desirable inside out, for now it appeal more to the head than to the heart.
