Knee Replacement Surgery in UK
Mostly people over the age of 65 years, experience knee & joint pains and are advised to undergo a knee replacement surgery. Knee replacement surgery is a process of replacing the deceased or worn out knee with an artificial joint. Also refereed as Arthroplasty, it is very common and routine operation performed for reducing the stiffness, pain and deformity in the knees caused by arthritis.
Approximately, on an average a knee replacement will last for about 15 to 20 years. Depending upon the condition of the patient, the surgeon either performs a total knee replacement or a partial knee replacement. In total knee replacement, both sides of the knee joints are replaced by using artificial material where as in partial knee replacement, only one side of the knee joints is replaced with artificial elements. The common condition where knee replacement required is osteoarthritis. Other complications that cause knee damage are rheumatoid arthritis, haemophilia, gout and knee injury due to sporting activities or accidents.
The ...
... surgery is advised to the patients only after a series of screening process through medication, physiotherapy or steroid injections. Even if treatments are not relieving pain and getting them back to their normal life activities, knee replacement surgery can be considered. If you are experiencing severe pain, swelling, stiffness in your knee joints, facing sleepless nights with severe pains, substantially limiting your mobility factors and social life, it is time for knee replacement surgery. The surgery is applicable to adults of any ages, old people who are active and physically strong.
Knee Replacement Surgery Process
The surgery is performed in an operation theater, where the patient is either given general or spinal anesthesia in sterile conditions. The surgeon cuts the knee through an incision centered over the front of the joint. The capsule of the knee is opened usually towards the inside edge of the kneecap, a cutting guide is placed at the end of femur. Using cutting guide, the surgeon cuts the bones from the edge of the femur into small pieces so that it is easy to remove. The worn surfaces are replaced by artificial knee that has a metal surface.
Another cutting guide is used to cut the tibia to get the correct alignment. The surgeon will replace the articular surface of the patella if needed. The metal femoral component is placed on the femur. The metal tray that holds the plastic spacer is attached to the top of the tibia. The plastic spacer is then attached to the metal tray of the tibia component. In case a patellar component is needed, surgeon will size it and fix it in place behind the patella. Finally the soft tissues are sutured well to hold the skin incision together.
