1.) Discover other confinement alternatives. Every time your crate-hating dog has a bad experience in a pet crate, it enhances his tension and stress and anxiety and makes it more challenging to modify his crate aversion. Your dog may endure a workout pen, a chain-link kennel established in your garage, or even a space of his own. A recent Peaceable Paws customer whose pet was wounding herself in the crate due to seclusion anxiety discovered her dog did simply great when restricted to the bedroom when she needed to be left alone.

2.) Utilize daycare alternatives. Lots of dogs who do not crate well are delighted to invest the day at the home of a friend, neighbor, or relative who is home when you are not, or at a good doggie childcare facility-- presuming your pet dog does well in the business of various other dogs. This is not a great option for dogs with true separation stress and anxiety, as they will be no happier with somebody else when they are separated from you than they are in a crate. (See "Scared to be Home Alone," WDJ July 2008.).

3.) Instruct them to love their dog crates ...
... Make use of a mix of counter-conditioning (changing his association with the pet crate from negative to positive) and operant conditioning/shaping (favorably strengthening him for gradually moving closer to, and eventually into, the crate) to persuade him to enter his crate willingly. Very gradually, work your means up to closing the door with your pet inside, and ultimately relocating longer and longer distances away from your crated pet dog for longer and longer periods of time. Note: If your canine has a separation/anxiety issue, you need to deal with and customize that behavior prior to crate-training will work.

Figure out why the crate is aversive to your dog. If he was crate-trained at one time and then chose he didn't like it, what changed?

Maybe there are environmental aversives; is it too cozy or too cold in his pet crate? Exists a draft blowing on him? Is it set near something that might expose him to an aversive sound, like the washing machine, buzzer on a clothes dryer, or an alarm of some kind? Possibly his pet crate is near the door, and he becomes overstimulated when someone knocks, or rings the doorbell, or when mail and package deals are delivered. Is somebody threatening him when he's crated-- another pet dog, perhaps? Or a child who bangs on the top, front, or sides of the pet crate? Perhaps he's been madly penalized by somebody who tosses him into the pet crate and screams at him-- or even worse. If the aversive thing is still occurring, all the remedial crate training in the world won't assist. You need to make the bad things stop.

If he's a sufferer of generalized anxiety or separation stress and anxiety and the crate aversion is component of a bigger disorder, or his stress about crating is extreme, you might wish to explore using behavior adjustment medicines with your behavior knowledgeable vet, or a veterinary behaviorist, to assist decrease stress enough that he can find out to love his crate. Note-- if your veterinarian, or german shepherd breeders, are not behavior experienced, inform her that many veterinary behaviorists will do free phone speak with various other veterinarians.

Some workplaces permit workers to bring their pet dogs to work with them; you do not know up until you ask. A surprising number of businesses enable well-behaved pets to accompany their owners; if it does not state "No Dogs" on the door, offer it a try! Your dog will thank you.
