I want to explain what pimples are in the simplest possible way. Zits, or pimples, are bumps on the skin that are caused by oil. They can be white, pimple help black, or red, and they are sometimes sore, flat, big, oozing, or any combination of the above! The bottom line is that zits are not fun. They look bad and cause people to look at you differently, especially if you are in school.
Here is a little more information about why zits form: First of all, oil is actually good for your skin. Everyone has oil on their face. The problem is that too much oil gets on the surface of the skin, in combination with too many dead skin cells that can't be shed. What happens is the oil makes the dead skin cells clump and get sticky. These cells then cannot shed off, they stick to the face and burrow in your pores. This is bad for your pores and causes them to become inflamed. The inflammation is what causes the appearance of the zit.
Once the inflammation (pimple) is there, it takes a while to heal. Some pimples heal in just 1 or 2 days, but some take a whole week ...
... or even more! It just depends on the type of zit. It also depends on how much you mess with the zit. If you squeeze it or pick at it, it may heal even slower because it can't heal properly.
So why do some people get zits and others don't? This is a difficult question. It has to do with a combination of genetics and lifestyle. Some people are predisposed to having bad acne. These means that no matter what they do and how healthy and clean their skin is, they still suffer with pimples. Then there are other people who just flat out don't take care of themselves or their skin, so they suffer with acne. Most people are some combination of the two of these.
The biggest lifestyle factor that contributes to acne is hormone imbalance. Some hormone imbalance is normal during the teenage years, but if too much imbalance is abnormal and can be easily prevented by making small lifestyle choices like increased activity level, healthier diet, taking vitamins, and drinking plenty of water. If you are suffering from hormonal acne, consider yourself lucky because this means that it is not just purely genetic, and there are things you can do to cure it.
If you are suffering from genetic acne, you may have a more difficult path in front of you. But don't worry, your acne can still be cured. Change your daily habits, use a quality cleanser, and you will be well on your way to clear skin.
