Before beginning any Do It Yourself projects it is highly advisable to consult a professional first. Cork floating flooring are not to be installed in bathrooms. What is a floating floor? It is a floor that is not anchored to a sub-floor, nor anchored to any large objects such as a kitchen cabinet. A cork floating floor also requires contraction as well as expansion. Expansion gaps must be observed without fail or the risk of the floor failing is a high risk. If guidelines are not properly followed the warranty may be void.

Before installation it is important that the sub-floor is a hard surface and is completely dry, smooth and clean. There is an industrial standard in the allowable difference of floor height. Over a length of three feet, a three millimeter height difference is allotted, if a floor contains more than this it is required to be repaired before beginning any work. It is a requirement that floating floors have expansion gaps. Each expansion gap cannot be less than a half of an inch. You may note that the minimum expansion gap required is the thickness of the floor. Expansion gaps must be included to lower ...
... floor lengths under twenty-five feet. For any floor expansion that is only slightly over twenty-five feet a “cheater” expansion gap can be used at the wall. Extra trim at the walls is required. In any and all doorways expansion gaps or transitions must be used.

Rules must also be followed for Forna floating flooring in a kitchen or basement. You may not run any floating floor under any cabinetry. Any painting of the walls, blacksplash installation or laying of counter top must be completed before installation. Do not forget to include the height of the floor in any measurements for appliances such as dishwashers or fridges that may require a height clearance. All toe kicks should also be trimmed and measured to size before laying flooring. When installing cork flooring in the basement or in any area, the flooring is to be the last thing installed. Once installation is complete there is one last step to take. Two coats of water based polyurethane is to be applied and allowed adequate time to completely dry.

Moisture control is imperative when installing in any area, particularly in a basement. Any excess moisture can be controlled with a plastic vapor barrier or an assortment of specially applied coatings. With the plastic vapor barrier mild to moderate moisture levels can be controlled with ease. Any large amount of excess liquids should be mopped or rid of some way to protect sub-flooring if there are any leaks in the sealing around the floor where it meets the wall.
