Most people know that the world of engineering has a problem. There are simply not enough up and coming engineers to meet the needs of the industries that use engineers. This shortage is caused be several factors.

Sadly, not enough young people have chosen to study engineering to replace the current engineers who are nearing the age of retirement. However, the main problem is that there are more and more roles for engineers. As the world changes, with more areas of the globe being industrialised there are a lot more engineers needed to design and build the necessary infrastructure.

At the same time, demand for other kinds of engineers is also growing. Mining and other extraction industries are continuing to expand. Without engineers, this expansion would not be possible. There are many other examples of industries where demand for engineers is growing year after year.

Addressing the Engineer Shortfall

Fortunately, this shortfall has been recognised and there is a drive to recruit new engineers. More and more engineering apprenticeships are becoming available and there is a drive to encourage as many ...
... girls as possible to take up some of those positions.

Why More Female Engineers

Without more girls, joining the engineering ranks there is no chance of addressing the skill gap before it becomes critical. Not enough boys from the general population want to become engineers, so their ranks have to be swollen by girls. However, that is not the only reason the engineering industries are actively recruiting girls for their apprenticeships.

Successful engineering teams are always made up from people with different strengths. In many fields, it is very important for engineers to be innovators. Frequently they are trying to solve new problems and in some cases are having to do so very quickly. Girls add a different dimension, a different point of view and often bring a different skill set to a team. The engineering industries already have talented women working within them, but, currently, their numbers are small. More are needed if firms are to continue to progress and develop.
