There are important rules to understand and follow before installing cork flooring. It is very important to note that floating floors should never under any circumstances be installs in bathrooms. What is a floating floor? It is a floor that is not anchored to any sub-floor or to any sort of cabinet or installation. Floating flooring requires expansion and contraction. It is imperative that expansion gaps are adhered or the floor could possibly fall.

First the sub-floor must be a hard surface that is flat, dry and clear of any debris. There is an industrial standard of the allowable difference in floor height. If there is greater than a three ...
... millimeter height difference over a length of three feet the subfloor must be repaired. Expansion gaps of floating floors must be nothing smaller than a half an inch. It is important to note that the thickness of the floor is the minimum expansion gap required. There must be an expansion gap incorporated to reduce continuous floor lengths of less than 25 linear feet. A “cheater” expansion gap may be used if the floating floor is only slightly longer than 25 feet in length. The “cheater” expansion gap can be added to the expansion gap and one inch of expansion must be left at the wall. Do not forget that all transitions and expansion gaps must be used through doorways as well.

Before beginning a Do It Yourself project in a kitchen it is recommended that you consult a professional before beginning. There are some rules that should be followed while installing cork floating flooring in a kitchen. The walls should be painted before laying any flooring, the counter top should be laid and the back-splash should also be installed. It is important to note that floating flooring cannot be run under cabinetry. Any cabinets or larger installations that will be made in the area should be made before flooring is installed because cork floating floors have to be the last thing installed.

Throughout a Do It Yourself project one should stay keen and aware of what needs to be done in what order. There is nothing worse than being half way through a project and having to start over and redo something because something was wrong or forgotten. Be sure that before installing any counter tops, dishwashers or anything that may involve a height clearance that the height of the flooring is considered in the calculation. Be sure to also measure and trim and “toe kicks” before installation begins. Two coats of water based polyurethane should be applied once the floor has been installed and should theoretically be one of the last steps in a kitchen renovation.

Working with Cork glue down tile may not be the easiest thing in the world but with a few tips you will find that it can be done. For more information on Installing Cork Floating Flooring or cork glue down tiles, contact iCork Floor.
