Covering Your Health While Traveling Abroad

I crossed my legs and tried to relax a little bit. Taxi rides weren't my favorite. There was something about the smell of the car mixed with a constant feeling of having your money sucked right out of your wallet that always left me uneasy. I closed my eyes and tried to mentally transport myself to Guatemala.
Being my first major trip ever, I wanted to make sure I didn't forget anything. I silently went over everything I had packed to make sure nothing had been neglected. I then pulled out my wallet for the 100th time to make sure my passport was securely tucked inside. Next to my wallet, I had strategically placed my international health care instructions. I went over them again, determined to be prepared if anything should happen.
Before leaving, I had checked with my insurance carrier on what my specific plan had covered, internationally. Paying a quick call to HealthPlanOne, (who I called whenever I needed an answer regarding my health insurance), I discovered that my coverage would be limited. So I had gone ahead and purchased both travel insurance and medical evacuation ...
... insurance. Although I hoped I would never need either of them, I couldn't be positive. I was going to be traipsing around the Guatemalan countryside for a week. Being a bit of a klutz, I knew there were no guarantees for my safety.
I also had tucked my current Health Insurance card with my identification numbers inside. In case any questions arose throughout my stay, I also had the phone numbers of my insurance company back home, my travel insurance, and my evacuation insurance.
Last, I had written down emergency contact information of family back home and in Guatemala. Although I knew no one personally in the country, I made sure to get the contact information for the United States consulate in the country. Traveling abroad was new for me and frankly, a little scary. I did find out that there are things we can do before we leave, to be prepared. Being thousands of miles away from home, it feels good to know I will be in good hands in case the worst happens.
