Privacy And Office Furniture By Maispace
We may be social beings by nature, but in the workplace people need their privacy in order to be productive. In fact, a study by BOSTI (Buffalo Organization for Social and Technological Innovation) revealed that privacy is the number-one indicator of high job performance. It's important for employers to accommodate employees with private desk areas to improve productivity as well as job satisfaction. While most businesses are not set up to provide individual, four-walled, sound-proof offices for every person they employ, there are furniture options that enable employees to have a sense of privacy and personal space without cutting them off completely from human interaction, which BOSTI concludes is almost equally important.
Panel office furniture systems, such as modular desks, cubicles, and moveable wall systems are customizable according to particular job requirements and personal preferences, so that their users are able to adjust modules to suit their ideal working environments. Many of these systems have features that accommodate day-to-day flexibility; panels can be removed or added when needed. A moveable wall ...
... system, for instance, can be shifted in little time to fit the agenda: If employees need to collaborate on a project, they can remove walls to temporarily conjoin offices; or they can remove just a single one so that they can give each other feedback but still maintain some degree of privacy.

BOSTI's findings have further implied to researchers that an employee's productivity is not contingent on the amount of privacy he has in the workplace specifically, but to his sense of control over his work settings, including factors such as social interaction and space utility. In panel systems, an employee's use of panels, windows, and/or doors enables his choice in determining how much of the world can come into his working space in a given moment. Within that space, he can adjust the height of his desk, lighting, and temperature, all depending on the system, before carrying on with business as usual.
Other options within an office building that are manufactured to serve privacy purposes are room dividers, office partitions, and mobile privacy screens. Room dividers are a series of panels, often on wheels, that can be shifted to suit the shape of a room and act as a barrier between two areas. Office partitions are often built into modular desk systems that facilitate little privacy but rather, for example, block a nosy next-door neighbor from reading one's computer screen. Mobile privacy screens are single paneled screens on wheels that are even a little more private than a partition but can be moved at a user's choosing.
All of these options can bolster privacy options in offices already using panel systems to allow an even further degree of customizability, but they are almost essential in some form within open-spaced offices without closed-off working areas for employees. After all, most people perform best in their jobs when they're most comfortable within their working environment, and they tend to be most comfortable when they have some control over their personal spaces.
MAiSPACE, the leader in the systems furniture industry, has been the staunchest supporter of adopting strict acoustical standards in the workplace. We are highly aware that offices can be either quiet or noisy by design, and the most cited complaint in today's offices is noise. The working environment is already stressful and pressure-packed. Additional irritants, such as noise from outside traffic, the roar of a jet plane, the rumble of poorly designed air conditioning or heating system or your adjacent colleague can be very annoying and frustrating when working on a deadline. A new survey has found that the stress of the modern workplace has increasingly induced outbursts, particularly among women angered by such ambient disturbances.
