Understanding Concepts Of Six Sigma

There are a few very core concepts at the foundation of the Six Sigma techniques and methodologies. Unless we strive at understanding these core concepts which go into the making of Six Sigma will keep on looking here and there but not understanding the fundamentals of Six Sigma. The most important key concept of Six Sigma can be summarized as;
-What is Critical to quality: By these we mean that which attributes are the most important from the point of view of the customer for acceptance of a product or a process.
-What is a Defect: the need arises to identify as to what constitute a defect in the eyes of the customer and what we are failing to deliver which is required by the customer.
-What is our Process Capability: It is of utmost importance to understand what a process is supposed to deliver and what it actually delivers.
-What is the Variation: the difference between what the customer wants and what the customer gets needs to be assessed from the customer’s point of view to arrive at the variations which need improvements?
-How to ensure Stable Operations: The aim is to ensure ...
... a consistent result from a predictable process which is aimed to deliver what the customer sees and wants.
-What is Design for Six Sigma: involved identifying and understanding the customer’s needs thoroughly and then designing the products and processes to ensure that the customer’s specifications are met and the defects reduced?
-Methodology to use: Six Sigma is categorized into tow main techniques and methodologies of implementing Six Sigma in any organization. Choice of methodologies usually depended upon a lot of factors and the choice between the two should be done intelligently after due diligence of the requirements. The two methods are DMAIC and DMADV. On one hand DMAIC is used basically for improvements in existing production and service processes, DMDAV is aimed at developing new product design and service processes in a manner that the end product is virtually defect free. Sometimes the DMAIC methods take a U-turn and get converted into DFSS as the process which are sought to be improved upon may require a total re-engineering of the process.
