Solar Lanterns have gained immense popularity in the last few years. But it is sad that the amount of interest generated by Solar Lantern as a term has not been directly proportional to its usage as a device.

On one hand, is a solar lantern which involves a mere exposure of the device to the imperishable sun and then, bringing it back to the point of end use while, on the other hand, there is a kerosene lamp which requires kerosene (costly) and a person to purchase it and fill the lamp with it on a regular basis and needless to mention, that the health of the engaged person burns with the smoke produced by the kerosene lamp.
Moreover, the use of kerosene lit lamps has an adverse effect on the climate as carbon dioxide emissions are produced due to the burning of kerosene.

Briefly talking about the structure of a solar lantern, it is basically a portable light device or a light fixture which comprises of a photovoltaic module, light source (LED enabled lamps/CFL etc), a charge controller and a rechargeable battery.

If we consider the scenario of rural India, kerosene and diesel are not readily available. Moreover, purchasing and transporting kerosene and diesel are extremely difficult and expensive too. Whereas, solar lantern requires no such fuel and it will last for several years with minimal servicing too.
7. Reduces the danger of fire. Diesel, Gasoline and Kerosene stored for lamps or generators are a safety threat as they can easily catch fire, whereas, solar lanterns are safe to use

Given the current scenario of India which is plagued with electricity crisis rising out of the imbalance between the demand and supply of power; power cuts, increasing cost of electricity, rising price of Kerosene (input material in the traditional kerosene lamps), no power supply in the interiors of India, I definitely, think that the use of Solar Lantern especially for the villages is the most convenient option- a GREEN OPTION.
