Hormones determine a woman’s vital bodily functions since her childhood. Monitoring hormone levels helps a woman understand and diagnose any health issues that may be hampering her physical or mental well-being.

Men may joke about it but women and their hormones are intricately linked to female physiology and psyche. Hormones determine a woman’s vital bodily functions including her menstrual cycle. The two main hormones in a woman’s body are estrogen and progesterone. A woman’s ovaries also produce some testosterone, the male hormone.

A woman’s hormones dominate her life almost since childhood both physiologically and psychologically. There are so many variations that occur in the female form since girlhood that she finds herself constantly adjusting to those changes. She first sees the most dramatic changes during puberty, then experiences the life-changing pregnancy and finally comes to terms with menopause which is a challenging time for most women.

Estrogen is responsible for development of breasts and the maturing of the vagina, fallopian tubes and uterus. It also stimulates growth in a ...
... girl’s body and distributes fat, with typically more deposits around hips and thighs. Testosterone builds muscle and promotes bone growth. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, LH and FSH are hormones that all play important roles in regulating a woman's period.

Understanding and keeping in tune with her hormones helps a woman remain healthy and happy. This is why regular hormone testing is vital for women. She can better cope with problems like excessive hair growth, hair loss, weight fluctuations, thyroid, menstrual irregularity etc. A woman’s famous mood swings have been associated with hormones but in medical research there is inconclusive evidence to support this view.

However, it cannot be denied that hormone fluctuations are vital in determining a woman’s physiology and therefore her psyche by default. Each individual hormone in a woman’s body rises and falls at varied points in the menstrual cycle. For example, if one of her eggs becomes mature and reaches the womb, but is not fertilised, then the level of progesterone and estrogen begin to fall again after having risen.

There is a long list of problems that hormonal imbalances cause and which are best diagnosed early through hormone testing:

* Heavy periods
* Thyroid dysfunction mimicking hypothyroidism
* Infertility
* Fatigue
* Fibro cystic breasts
* Acceleration of the aging process
* Allergies
* Breast tenderness
* Decreased sex drive
* Depression
* Hot flashesOsteoporosis
* Memory loss
* Increased blood clotting increasing risk of strokes
* Hair thinning
* Hypoglycemia
* Excessive facial hair
* PMS (pre-menstrual stress)
* Foggy thinking
* Headaches
* Irritability
* Miscarriage

* Irrational hunger
* Uterine fibroids
* Water retention

* Bloating
* Uterine cramps
* Fat gain around the abdomen, hips and thighs
* Migraines
* Breast swelling with pain or lumps

Listing these issues is not to say that nature has not equipped women to adjust automatically to hormonal changes. It has. Nature has programmed the female body in a way that she can make symptom-free adjustments to hormonal changes. However, it cannot be denied that from a woman’s cradle to her grave, hormones determine many of her life experiences. It is therefore important to understand and track them for good overall health and well-being. The importance of hormone testing for women cannot be stressed enough. It is pertinent for a woman’s healthy life.
