Water Cooler Talk: What Is Abfraction?
Water Cooler Talk: Here is an interesting subject to talk about at the water cooler.
Do you know what abfraction is?
Abfraction is commonly noticed as recession of the gums or groves in your teeth located at the gum line. The grooves or tooth root exposure can cause your teeth to be sensitive to cold. Trying to solve the problem with costly, painful gum surgery doesn’t correct the problem for long; mostly the recession is caused by grinding your teeth. If the surgery is done without correcting the way your teeth mesh and grind, recession will relapse.
There are easy non-surgical treatments and a modern cosmetic dentist can help you with treatment alternatives.
Abfraction was discovered by NASA. Some physicists did research do find the scientific based reason for groves deep in the teeth. NASA physicists did a force vector analysis and found when a person grinds the teeth all of the forces are focused at the gum line. The research was not easy to understand, it was based on physics and most dentists are more comfortable with biology rather than complex physics force vector studies. So, dentists were ...
... slow to pick up on the NASA research. You may remember in the TV series “Mad Men” that a medical devise was touted for a cure that was fake, the Madison Avenue men advertised it anyway as a cure to make money: similar in fashion, a tooth brush company used the gum recession as a marketing ploy to sell “Soft” tooth brushes.
The tooth brush company made million$ as did false cures like Sensodyne toothpaste. Sensodyne added formaldehyde to their toothpaste to kill the nerves at the surface of the roots of your teeth, thus dead nerves=less cold sensitivity. The Sensodyne cure never really worked… the soft tooth brush cure never worked and all the scientific research done independent of the companies profiting show these false cures don’t work. The false marketing was so effective that 50% of all dental professionals believe a soft tooth brush will cure abfraction.
As the number of highly trained dentists decreases and the number of non-dentists used to place fillings increases, dental treatment quality will go down. As HMO and PPO plans continue to deny legitimate treatment and mislead clients to save the insurance company money, people with loose teeth and tooth pain will increase. The best way to secure healthy teeth and gums is to find a dentist loyal to you and not indebted to an insurance plan by a secret contract.
