Toyota Corolla Hatchback Review

Globally acclaimed Toyota Corolla is the bestseller in the history of the car-world. The Japanese Company has been on to the winner position for so long with its clear-cut and simple hatchback. Aiming to give the likes of Vauxhall Astra SRi and Volkswagen Golf GTi, the T-Sport is one ‘hot hatchback’ version. The only reason which comes to mind about the prosperity of hot hatches among the car buyers is due to the high numbers of wealth. It’s quite logical, if one needs a fast car, one can buy a proper fast car. But if one is looking for something that is – as a package – fast and practical, buying an MPV is the best option. However, it seems that the rumblings about the fate of these hot hatches do not bother the manufacturers at all. From Ford there is ever hot version of Focus, Honda came up with the Civic Type-R and, of course, the sizzling Golf GTi.

Toyota Corolla is offering three petrol engines: a 95bhp 1.4-litre; a 109bhp 1.6-litre and a 189bhp 1.8-litre T Sport engine. The Toyota Corolla diesel engines are: a 89bhp 1.4-litre D-4D and a 114bhp 2.0-litre D-4D engine. ...
... As a standard, all models have a manual five speed gearbox. With 1.6-litre petrol engine, comes a four speed automatic gearbox and with 1.4-litre D-4D comes a five speed MMT automatic gearbox. T2, T3, T Spirit and T Sport are the specific trim designators with T Sport sitting at the top of the range. Now the question which comes to mind is: will Toyota be able to match up to the outstanding performance of Civic or, in terms of image, Volkswagen’s hot hatch? It does not matter, whether the Corolla is produced in Turkey or Japan, the build quality and reliability is absolutely above suspicion.

The Corolla does hold the distinction of being always on the top of customer satisfaction surveys. The brilliantly built Corolla has more than enough space to hold couple of suitcases or a large number of family shops. The door pockets are practical and large, stowage bins and several cubbyholes are placed cleverly in the cabin. The stereo controls are mounted on the steering wheel, climate controls and satellite navigation displays are easy to use. Road and wind noise is kept significantly low with the help of acoustically sensitive windshield and if it was not for car’s engine sound at the motorway speed, the cabin would be perfectly quiet.

The reach/rake manoeuvrable steering wheel and front seats are adjustable. However, cramps on long journeys are likely to be induced due to the flat and hard bases of the front seats. The not so powerful 2.0 litre diesel engine that can produce 89bhp is not the wise choice to go for. The most potent of the diesel range is the 114bhp version of the same 2.0 D-4D. Overall the most cost effective pick of the Coroll engine range is the 1.6L petrol unit that can generate 109bhp. The recommended trim level if you are buying a Corolla is the T3. It comes with climate control, alloys rims and electric powered windows, if you want a sunroof than T Spirit is the trim level for you.
