For the Indian people, the railways are a convenient mode of travelling especially for long distance trips. The Indian railway is also known as the fourth largest railway network in the entire world. It is well known to be managed by the Ministry of Railways under the government of India. This railway network has sixteen zones throughout the country and helps in the transport of over 6 billion people and also in the transport of 350 million tonnes of freight. The trains on this route cover the length and breadth of the country and is also known as a leading commercial service providing jobs to over 1.6 million people.

There a number of varieties of trains that are offered by the Indian Railway to commuters. These are Rajdhani trains, the regular passenger trains, Duronto express, the 5 star luxury trains and special trains for hilly routes. Passes are offered by the department to the people that come under certain categories like the one offered to people over the age of 60 or senior citizen and the one offered to people who are in the country but are originally from other countries. Tickets can be booked till 90 days before the concerned date of travel. With the popularity of the internet, although it is true the Rail department of the country has not really undergone much advancement through a long period of time, recently it has gone through a lot of change in many ways. Also, the option of paying through an online bank account has been added.

The Indian Rialway is coming up with concepts of new schemes like the Tatkal Scheme that has benefitted people in very many ways. According to this, a person can get a seat even three days before the date of journey. All one needs to do is pay a flat extra amount over the original price of the ticket. Also, the concept of RAC and WL has been introduced. RAC stands for Reservation Against Cancellation and WL stands for Waiting list. These can help people who don’t have a confirmed berth but still want to travel. These people can be arranged a seat in the class and train that they chose to travel in.
