Flat packs have quite the questionable reputation. For their short history they have gone from completely useless to the best way to furnish your home. And let me tell you, it wasn't a smooth ride. Flat pack furniture had its ups and downs like everything else. And through these turbulent years, a lot of rumours about knock-down furniture have sprouted to life. Some of them were true a long time ago, others are just wild guesses and there is the little group of partially true ones. So, let me tell you some of the rumours and analyse them in details for you.

Flat packs are insanely cheap.
Well, this isn't exactly a rumour. It's well known that ready-to-assemble furniture is much cheaper than conventional moveables. But a lot of people assume that this is some kind of a trap to make you pay more, either by needing extra service for assembly and delivery, or by buying a new piece every few months. We'll examine the durability of flat packs later on in this article, so let's focus on the services. While it's true that you might need delivery or assembly by a professional, it's not mandatory. Unlike a conventional ...
... arm chair, you can fit a flat pack in your family sedan and get it home without any problems.

So, you'll need delivery services, only if you decide to buy many pieces at once. Even then you won't have to pay the store to deliver them to your home. There are companies, offering IKEA delivery in London and other big cities in the country. They're both cheaper and faster, because if the retailer you bought the items from, has a lot of orders, it can take up to a month for your furniture to arrive. Such companies, on the other hand, don't have as many orders and, usually, they deliver the products for no more than 24 hours. And even with their services, the total price you'll pay will still be significantly lower than the price of a traditional piece of furniture.

Flat pack assembly is awfully hard.
This is one of the partially true myths. It depends on the skill and knowledge of the consumer. Honestly, you don't need any experience with flat packs to assemble them with ease. All you need is the ability to use basic tools properly. The rest is all about following the instructions and having some common sense. And while most people are aware how to use a screwdriver, they still fail at furniture assembly. You can draw your own conclusions from that.

Of course, the option to use the services of a professional assembler is always present. So, in case you don't want to waste time and effort and you have a few pounds to spend, you can give some furniture assembly company a call. They won't charge you that much and the final price, including the delivery and the item itself, will still be lower than the price of a conventional piece of furniture.

Flat packs are extremely fragile.
Actually, they were fragile, yes. They used to break down after an year of use. But, that's in the past. The quality control on flat packs have been increased significantly. Now they are just as sturdy as traditional furniture. In fact, some flat packs might even outlast their conventional counterpart. That is, of course, if they're assembled properly. If the assembly is poor, it's highly likely that the flat pack will give up on you, so make sure you do it right or call a professional to do it for you.
