The cells can (and often do) overheat. This causes neighboring cells to also overheat in a chain reaction, called “thermal runway propagation”. It is very dangerous because it may result in a battery short circuit thus cause a fire. At this point, it means that we need new battery which is safer and less prone to fire risk. So far, there are two main companies that have achieved technology advancement in this field.
A company called Gcorelab offers a cooling solution that uses cooling plates. Its proprietary “oblique fin technology” makes for cooling results 50-80 percent better than existing liquid cooling systems, TechCrunch reports. The cinch is that the process even requires the same amount of energy. How it works? They claimed than battery heat management systems are shifting to liquid-based systems from air-based ones. That’s because if cheap and readily put in place, air-cooling systems are rather inefficient. However, with the help of cooling plates, people can get a more affordable solution to liquid-cooling systems. Have to say, it is really an ambitious program.
Another company called Electrovaya, which is launching a new type of Lithium-ion Laptop Battery called SuperPolymer 2.0, which is able to operate within a wider temperature range and better manage its internal temperature changes. They are all pround of this item since it can be used for boats, and for residential and grid storage, in addition to plug-in vehicles, is subject to a "large and growing sales pipeline." It is much safer to use. Maybe it will be the next popular generation batteries which is filled with our lifes.
