As the economy seems to continue its wicked ways and we continue to look for ways to save money, I have found several things to do in Houston for under a dime. So no need to sit in the house and watch the news when you can take the family out for a fun evening with out denting the wallet.

Houston has a fantastic entertainment scene with lots to do and tickets to these events can be found on the cheap. Bargain prices in Houston abound but you just have to know where to look. So if you live in Houston or are visiting for the first time, check out the following suggestions on how to spend some fun time with friends and family.

A. D. Players Theatre Company is one of Houston's oldest and most respected. They do a full season of Mainstage shows as well as Children's shows. Currently playing on the mainstage is John, His Story. Performed off-Broadway in 1977, John, His Story chronicles the seven great signs performed by Jesus Christ in the Gospel of John. The come alive through people who bore witness to Him--His disciples, beggars, wedding guests, the wealthy, and the ordinary, everyday people. Dynamic and lyrical, ...
... the drama of crises and the comedy of celebrations are astutely woven together in a telling tapestry of Christ's works. Tickets are only $9.00.

The Hero Squad vs. the Princess Snatchers closes this Friday and has had a great run at the Rotunda Theatre. A Texas Premiere, The Hero Squad of Metro Valley, Iowa is a superhero team on the rise. After stumbling onto a nefarious plan by the evil Nikolai Oshkoshbgoshikov, the Hero Squad learns that you can't judge people by their appearance. It's a comic book show of adventure, friendship, acceptance, and dreams. Tickets - $5.50.

A special production for Easter this year is A Phoenix Too Frequent by Christopher Fry. 'Phoenix' is a story of romance redemption and resurrection. Perhaps in it you may find an allegory just right for Easter. Directed by Jeannette Clift George. Tickets - $7.50

For a can't miss day of fun with the kids you should check out ComedySportz 4 Kidz which takes place the first Saturday of every month. As tickets for this are only $4.00 and it's a great time for the entire family. Created for our younger fans and their families, our ComedySportz 4 Kidz show features three all-star performers who invent the performance with the help of the audience.

For a little adult humor look no further than the Laff Spot featuring some of the best comedians in the country. With 5 shows on the weekends there is no excuse not to go. Tickets are only $7.50 if purchased in advance. With all the negative news, who doesn't need a bit of comedy for a change of perspective?

Music you say? I got you covered. For only $8.00 you can take the family to the Hobby center on March 21 to see Musiqa perform live. Musiqa and Stages Repertory Theatre collaborate on a program that includes musical works by Mary-Ellen Childs, George Crumb, Pierre Jalbert and a world premiere music-and-light show by Anthony Brandt and lighting designer Christina Giannelli, intertwined with scenes from past Pulitzer Prize winning plays.

And if live theatre is your thing, Houston has one of the largest concentrations of small to midsize theatres in the country. Award winning Mildred's Umbrella is currently performing Compleat Female Stage Beauty, about the most famous portrayer of female roles on the London Stageby a man. Set in 1661, Compleat Female Stage Beauty tells the story of Ned Kynaston who was applauded onstage and off for his interpretations of Shakespeare's ladies. Tickets are only $6.00.

If theatre is your thing you should also consider taking in a show at Main Street Theatre. Another Houston gem, Main Street has been around for some time and also offers a full season of shows. Now playing at Main Street is the World Premiere, Pie Dialogues. The Pie Dialogues follows Dawn and Sean through their lives as parents and individuals. Through a series of eight scenes representing eight different junctures in their lives, the play traces Pie's journey - and that of her parents - from toddlerhood to womanhood.

Enjoy all these events for under $10.00. So if you are planning an outing or visiting Houston with the family you can't go wrong with any of the above.
