Nature has its own way of dealing with problems. And so does our body. In the slightest of illness and abnormalities, our body is capable enough to take care of itself and recover from those. Of course, major illnesses require external support in the form of medications, but even then, it is our internal mechanism which does the trick of healing the body. And this is mainly because of the blood components, namely red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, all housed in the yellowish liquid called plasma.

Importance of platelets

Platelets are responsible for releasing certain proteins called growth factors into the body, which stimulate repair of damaged tissues in cases of ligament tear, sprains and muscle spasms. This happens even when the concentration of platelets in the plasma is just 10%, so imagine the power of plasma which would be having 90% concentration of platelets in it! This is what happens in platelet rich plasma treatment, a therapy used to cure multiple disorders, particularly the joints.

Plasma rich platelet therapy

The PRP process begins with the collection of a sample of ...
... blood from the patient’s body. This blood is then put through a centrifugal force to make it rich and concentrated in its platelet content. The same is then injected into the patient’s affected area, within at least 2mm proximity of the region. The outcome of this is increased blood flow and enhanced matrix formation, both of which help in the healing of soft tissues. They also restore tendons and strengthen the cartilage of the affected area.

The after- effects

The stimulation of growth factors causes inflammation and swelling in the injected area and intense pain in the initial days, for which patients must take painkillers or ice the swollen area. A few weeks into the platelet rich treatment, and the pain begins to subside as the damaged tissues begin to heal themselves. Physical strength begins to improve and swelling and redness reduces significantly. Yet, the patient should visit the doctor regularly during this time to keep him updated about the recovery developments.

Recent developments

Although the PRP process has seen the light of the day only recently, there have already been many developments in the theory and execution of the same. Thanks to intensive research and experiments, it is possible to select and isolate components which ensure anti-inflammation and reduced pain in the injected area. Use of natural or homeopathic tools to do the same has become popular because it enables doctors to customize treatment procedures to obtain best results. The result is that more number of patients now experience much less pain post their PRP therapy.

Usefulness of PRP treatment

As stated above, the treatment procedure of each patient receiving it is customized as per their body requirements. Also, since the therapy makes use of one’s own blood to cure the illness, every patient is considered unique. The common practice of a single treatment for all patients does not apply in this case, and hence they can be rest assured that their treatment is exclusively individual.
