Steven Patrick Morrissey, the songwriter and singer, was born in England on 22 May, in 1959. He was gifted in writing poetry and music right from a very young age. His career as a singer started in 1982 when he was invited by Johnny Marr, a guitarist and songwriter to work with him. Andy Rourke, the bassist and Mike Joyce, the drummer also joined the duo and together they formed their band, The Smiths. Their first single was ‘Hand in glove', which didn't do very well. However, they soon signed a contract with Rough Trade Records. They then released a few more singles and their popularity soared.

About Morrissey's Band

The band's first album, ‘The Smiths' was released in 1984. It was a huge success and reached number two on the UK album charts. They travelled extensively in UK and US. Their fan following increased and they released their second album, ‘Meat is Murder' in 1985. This time too, their album was a hit and it reached Number 1 on UK album charts. In 1986, the band released its next album, ‘The Queen Is Dead' and this album reached number two on the UK album charts. They then worked ...
... on their fourth album, ‘Strangeways, Here We Come' but after recording this album, the band disbanded due to differences between Morrissey and Marr. However, this album was quite successful in UK.

After the split, Morrissey tied up with Stephen Street, the producer of the album ‘The Smiths' and Vini Reilly, the guitarist. He then came up with his solo album, ‘Viva Hate'. This album was certified gold by RIAA. In 1992, he released, ‘Your Arsenal' which was nominated for the Grammy Awards. His album ‘Vaxhaull and I', released in 1994 was also very successful. After this, his career began a downslide.

Ten years later, Morrissey came back with a bang, with the release of his album ‘You Are the Quarry'. In 2006, the album ‘Ringleaders of the Tormentors' was released and it reached number one on the UK albums chart. Morrissey then went on to have several hit singles. He toured extensively to promote his albums. His new album, ‘Years of Refusal' that has 12 tracks was released in February 2009. Morrissey received an O2 Silver Clef Award and Mojo Icon Award in 2004. Morrissey has always been quite outspoken about other artists' work and also about politicians.
