Online Sites: Bringing Breaking News In India Despite The Challenges

Online news agencies in India face the challenge not only by competing with established newspapers in delivering content but also trying to capture some share in the growing online advertising. For example, people can just visit search engines like Google and Yahoo, key in latest news in India that they want to read (say, for instance, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s introspective reaction on the recent gang-rape incident in New Delhi) then they will be delivered to the different sites carrying the same story.
The news industry in India has a characteristic that is unique compared to most countries in the world. For one thing, there are just so many regionalist languages in the nation compared to the United States, for example, where everybody speaks and reads English. So websites could not just follow the model that has been successful elsewhere, adopt it to provide breaking news in India and expect to achieve success as well.
That’s why it’s not uncommon for India news sites to also deliver news in Hindi, apart from English which can be understood by nearly 70% of the population in India. To try ...
... to deliver news for free while relying on online advertising to push profits upwards will not be a sustainable model for now as the industry is not yet very sophisticated in India.
In fact, India’s print newspaper industry is just the opposite of what is happening worldwide where newspapers are folding left and right. In 2013, the newspaper industry in India is projected to hit nearly INR350 billion. So even if the digital sites can bring the latest news in India more than print would, readers are still not accessing the Internet.
Part of the reason is the very low numbers with regard to Internet access in India. But the latest numbers prove to be encouraging. The Internet population is expected to grow by 30 million more to reach a total of 180 million in 2013. Half of that total will represent the number of users who will access the Internet through their mobile devices. So the market potential of readers who want to get their fix for breaking news in India is clearly there. It’s a matter of online news agencies recognizing that need and trying to find their niche. More importantly, it’s a matter of the willingness of news websites to suffer through the birth pains as India transitions from print to digital in delivering the latest news.
