Chain Effect

When going on a holiday you may have thought about renting a car once or twice. Some people do it in a heartbeat thinking that driving a car somewhere abroad is very similar to driving a car in your home country.
Driving a car in different countries gives you a good perspective of the road conditions that may differ a lot from what you have gotten used to. I have driven a car in China, Mediterranean countries, France, Estonia, Russia and so on. There are so many things you have to take into account when driving a car abroad.
In Finland, where I live, we have a road maintenance culture that definitely has its ups and downs. We have great initiatives in improving our roads and some of them even come from very innovative companies like Nokian Renkaat, a finnish tire company. Nokian Renkaat has launched a Hakka team service with a purpose of fixing some major issues on the road regarding safety. You can actually report the issues that you see on the roads and Hakka Team will repair the issues. It is a great initiative and it shows not only corporate responsibility towards the communities, it also shows a newly formed ...
... culture in traffic.
Having been driven almost in every corner of the world, I have to say that this does not exist in most countries. Some countries are very poor in managing the issues that affect your safety on the roads. Very often you have to adapt to the situations because the situations are not that easily fixed.
To name one good country and traffic culture I have to say that the German people are very effective in improving their traffic culture to being better and better. If something is not right people can assume that it will be fixed in a matter of days.
To mention one country from the other end I have to say that some of the most dangerous roads I have driven, were in Croatia where some of the not so popular roads were treated as abandoned and therefore they were very dangerous.
Keep your eyes open and learn about the country that you are going to if you want to rent a car. This way you can predict most of the situations that will occur.
