The Land Rover Discovery is in its fourth-generation and it is the ultimate all-rounder. It mixes a relaxing drive with punchy diesel engines and a cabin that shows of a luxury car quality with seven seats and lots of space. When you drive the Discovery you forget the stresses of daily life as the ride is so soothing and comfortable. The steering is very accurate which lets you place the car precisely on the road. Inside the cabin is first class and seating position is well placed. The dashboard offers a lavish mix of leather, wood and soft-touch plastics. The cabin is spacious enough for driver and passengers.

Hi-tech gadgetry like the dual-view centre console screen is enviable. There is also a set of five cameras as an option. The XS and HSE models get leather seats, parking sensors, automatic lights and sat-nav and a CD changer. With all the seats folded boot space is a whopping 2,558-litres. A permanent four-wheel drive and Terrain response comes as standard. The materials used inside make it evident that attention to detail has been given. Land rover’s acclaimed mpg is 32.1mpg but we reckon it will struggle to get to 25mpg. The CO2 emissions stand at 230g/km which is lots more than BMW X5 3.0d. BMW has much better figures of 38mpg and 195g/km of CO2.

Servicing for the Discovery doesn’t come cheap either and it is costly to replace its tyres. The Land Rover Discovery is a very competent off roader with high quality inside and outside. If compared to its main rival BMW X5, the X5 is frugal and greener than the Disco. The BMW also serves the purpose of a capable family car and does not perform bad at all when off road. However the Disco still beats the X5 in overall talent and this fact has remained the same for a long time now and the Disco is in its fourth generation. It offers limitless practicality, unbeatable off road performance and a smooth on road ride. The residual values are also good making the Disco a wise choice.
