Traveling with your rabbit can be easy if you take the proper precautions and take proper care of them along the way. Heat is a major concern for rabbits as they usually cannot tolerate much heat and can only regulate their body temperatures by allowing cool air pass through their ears. This article provides you a guide on how you can travel safely with your pet:

Buy specifically designed cages for rabbits. The travel cage should have sturdy wires. There are many sizes and configurations in which rabbit cages are available, depending on the size of the rabbit and how many rabbit you will be carrying. If traveling by plane, know the specific rules and regulations about cages, before you buy one. Cages for the airlines may have to be different than those you can take by the car.

Fasten the water bottles, food dishes and trays and any other items with the cage so that they do not move around within the cage during the journey. Buy water bottles and dishes that can be screwed to the cage. Remove unnecessary items, like toys, from the cage. If your tours will be for 10 hours or less, the bunny can do without food and ...
... water for that amount of time. Be sure to feed the bunny immediately on arriving your destination.

Place a layer of absorbent bedding material on the tray that can absorb any waste produced by the rabbit or spilled water.

Secure the cage properly so that it will not shift or tip. If you will be traveling far, use a layer of foam under the cage to provide a cushion support to the bunny. Rabbits prefer a dark and cool environment as they are more sensitive to heat. Use shades in the car windows or place the carrier in the side of shade.

Be careful while driving. Avoid sudden acceleration or deceleration. Also do not accelerate while taking turns.

During stops, take out your bunny from the cage and into enclosed space. Do not take him to an open space from where he can run away.

Obtain a health certificate from your vet within 10 days of the flight. If you have multiple rabbits, you can get one certificate for all of them. Inquire your vet about this.

When traveling by flight, make your reservations early and let the airline know that you will be carrying rabbits. Opt for direct flight instead of break journeys. If possible, avoid flying in warmer months. Get a written confirmation of your rabbit's reservation on plane. Delta is one of the few airlines that allow rabbits on board in cabin.
