Wire cloth is basically a closely knitted interlocking of ductile metals (or alloys) locked together to form a close sheet (similar to the cotton fabric) of the metal (or alloy). The strength of the cloth depends upon the knitting of the wires with each other. The cloth is usually rolled and shipped in bundles. The finesse of cloth makes it useful for its aesthetic appearance.

Generally, the pattern of the wire cloth weaves has spaces in between them that may be shaped in various geometric patterns, ranging from diamond-shaped patterns to square- or rectangular- shaped patterns. The size of the space in between the wires also differs and may be very tight or large. Aside from the material used, spacing may determine the exact purpose of the wire cloth.

The additional impurities increase the temperature and may choke vital parts of the system. To prevent such occurrences, the close knit of wire cloth comes in handy.

Likewise, wire cloth innovations thanks to technology has improved the effectiveness of wire cloths by coating them with liquefied alloys to add to the cloth’s strength in order to prevent or delay corrosion and acidic reactions. A wire cloth’s performance, however, can still be affected by the choice of metal used for the cloth. Therefore, no single wire cloth is applicable to all applications. In short, wire cloths are not “one size fits all.”

When manufacturing wire cloths, industrial application, physical properties of the material, flexibility, stiffness, surface roughness, filtration objectives, and even flow direction must all be taken into consideration for the purification system to work flawlessly.

Fast and easy maintenance must also be considered as well as the manner of cleaning the cloth, if this is necessary. One factor that is of vital importance is that while a wire cloth may be a good purifier of liquids, a wire cloth might get clogged up by aerial particles so that water and other fluids cannot flow through it. In this case, the wire cloth must be malleable yet strong enough for it to be cleaned by means of high pressure air blasts, steam jets, or high pressure water streaming. Vacuum blowers may also be used to clean the wire cloths.

The science of engineering metallurgy has grown two-fold as modern technology becomes more advanced with each passing year or decade. For more specific application purposes, the discovery of newer and stronger metals and alloys or a combination of two or three alloys is being studied. Because the needs of industries demand it, research and development continues. The future on stronger or more unique wire cloths is probably just a short time away.
