Railway Station Codes: How Important Are They?

When traveling on trains, or even at the railway station, one often finds a couple of travelers deeply engrossed in conversations regarding the timings of trains, the state of the Indian Railways, and even the future plans of the Indian Government as far as trains are concerned. What’s more, they even argue on how the rail network in India could see some positive changes and how the negatives could be done away with. Listening to their conversation often spellbinds the average commuter and only later to these novice travelers realize that the ‘experts’ are only regular passengers! This is how deep the rail culture runs in the lives of some Indians! Train timings, details of the Rail Budget, railway station codes, train numbers, and even the booking status on certain routes are common knowledge to some travelers who have a habit of being aware of all that is happening around them. In India, travelling by trains is simply a way of life for many. Few other countries are as dependent on their ...
... rail network as the Indian nation and its people can never imagine a life without trains. For some, trains are a once a year phenomenon that take them to the holiday destination and back. For others, trains are the very means of their survival without which they would not even be able to have a square meal at the end of the day. As diverse as the lives of people in the Indian subcontinent are, and no matter how diverse their dependency on trains, the fact remains that trains do form an essential part of almost every Indian’s life.

However, they are certainly not as important as some travelers make them out to be and one can survive easily even if one is not aware of the code that the very station they are standing in carries! These codes differ from station to station and no two codes are ever similar to each other. Some examples are NDLS for New Delhi, SBC for Bangalore, JSM for Jaisalmer, ERS for Ernakulam, DDN for Dehradun, and MMR for Manmad. The railway station codes are usually helpful in official matters and the internal working of the Indian Railways.
