An aerator can be an accessory, add-on, or machine for adding oxygen to liquid substances such as water or other solid matters wherein air is needed to be added. This process is called aeration or sometimes aerification.

Aerator is simple equipment that is used to add air/ oxygen to water or earth (depending upon its usage and application) to improve the efficiency of the device or application. It works on a simple principle of increasing the surface area of the exposed surface, to create greater impact, thereby making the exercise more profitable.

Aerators can also be used to add air or oxygen to improve the efficiency or flow of a specific device or application. The best example of an aerator can be found at the end of any indoor kitchen or wash basin faucet. It looks like a wire mesh with little holes in it. When water flows through it, the water is dispersed by the air in between the gaps, making the water flow look regulated into smaller jet streams. This controlled flow makes less splashing, which means water is conserved. Without the aerator, water flow is one strong stream that results in much splashing ...
... and much wasted water. Some faucet aerators are built in within the faucet. Others are simple wire mesh add-ons built into the tap assembly. Aerators prove useful in areas that have low water pressure.

An aquarium or fish tank is another example for aeration. Observe where the air bubbles are pumped out. The tube that pumps out the oxygen into the water is attached to a water pump or air compressor to pump air into the water for the fish and other aquatic life to breathe.

Aerators for soil are usually machine pumps attached to garden or lawn machines. Soil aeration is the process to pump highly pressurized oxygen into the soil to improve lawn growth or about an inch of top soil is removed and the soil pumped with air before adding the lawn. The aerators improve the soil by allowing micro fauna and micro flora to grow due to the added oxygen, which in turn pass on produced oxygen to other plants or the lawn. It also improves water absorption and water drainage, causing less soil erosion.

There are also other types of aerators that are used in the outdoor. These are essentially used in garden and lawn setups. Over there, the aerator pierces the upper surface of the ground in limited extent thereby exposing the inner surface of the earth’s crust that is devoid of oxygen. This exercise helps the air and oxygen to reach the roots of the plants, shrubs or grass in the ground and breathe. The more they breathe, the better they grow.

Aerators for food are used to make food grow or to make them lighter. For example, air is added to flour and yeast when bread is baked to make the bread grow. CO2 or oxygen added to cakes makes them lighter in spite of the many ingredients added. To pump air into large vats of water, liquids, chemicals, wine, and even sludge and molasses, production and manufacturing installations utilize large aerators as mentioned above. To ensure a continuous flow of pumped air into the large vats, corrosion free pumps and pipes are used.

Aerator technology is not a new one. However, it is an evolving world with newer applications demanding specialized aerators with specific materials. Its simplicity of usage helps it stand apart from the costly Equipments and alternatives for them. The science is just growing and innovations in the coming era will certainly take the importance of aerators to a new level.
