Disk space, data transfer, and connection speeds – all things that you need to know about, and make decisions about when you’re trying to find the right web hosting for you. But do you know how much of each resource you need? Or even what they are?

One of the first things you’ll need to do when you sign up for web hosting is to determine how much disk space you will need. The disk space is the actual amount of space on the web server that your website will need. With every file that you include with your website, whether it’s software or an image you’re uploading, you are using up more server space, or disk space. And if you use more than the agreed-upon amount, your site could possibly be shut down.

Small of medium websites typically only need between 10 and 100MB of disk space for their website. However, businesses or websites that are very large will need much more than that, especially if they have a lot of image or video files to put on their site. Remember that each HTML page, or every page of your website, will take anywhere from 5 and 50KB of space on the server. Adult website hosting ...

Data transfer, or bandwidth, is the amount of gigabytes your website will need in order to be able to upload to the computers of visitors. Just like your website can crash if you go above your allotted storage space, it can also crash if you exceed your maximum bandwidth. Small to medium websites usually only need between 1GB and 5GB of data transfer every month. Very large business sites usually need 100GB or more.

The connection speed you use for your website will largely depend on the web host you choose, as it will be the speed of their servers that determines how fast your website loads onto a visitor’s computer. Back when the Internet was just first becoming popular, T1 was considered to be the very best connection speed that there was. However, great advancements have been made since that time and now you can find connection speeds that are much more powerful.

Knowing what connection speed you need can be a challenge, because there are many and the inner workings of connection speeds can be complex. The best way to know if a web host will be able to provide the speed you need is to ask them for some references of websites that they host, and that are on a similar plan as your website would be if you sign up with them. Visit those websites, and see if they load onto your computer quickly. If they do, then the host probably has connection speeds suitable for your website.

Knowing how much you need of certain resources for your website can be a tricky thing. But following these guidelines, and listening to your web host upon signing with them, can help ensure that you get exactly what you and your website need.
