Inclinometers And Their Applications
Any time a job requires calculating tilt, positive elevation, or negative elevation, an inclinometer can be used. In fact, many industries make use of inclinometers due to their relative mechanical simplicity, reliability, and ability to repeatedly produce accurate results. The specific applications of inclinometers are varied and exist across many fields such as construction, forestry, and even aerospace and other high-tech industries. Some examples of uses for inclinometers include, but are not limited to:
Ensuring the correct angle for well drilling
Drilling wells is a highly technical and complex process that requires very precise measurements. If the drilling is done at too aggressive an angle, the drill will experience mechanical failure due to increased friction and, worse, the drill could cause underground gas deposits to ignite or explode. Using an inclinometer helps engineers and equipment operators ensure that the drill stays at the correct angle throughout the drilling process.
Measuring straightness over long distances
In construction and ...
... engineering, it's often necessary that a component, structure, or area of land be consistently flat or of a consistent slope over a large distance. Measuring changes in slope can be done with expensive lasers, or with more expensive satellite imagery. However, a skilled operator can use a much cheaper, and still highly accurate, inclinometer and achieve useful results in finding deviation between the slopes of two points.
Calculating the range of motion of the human body
Many medical problems can be first detected when someone notices a decrease in the range of motion in their joints. Also, measuring the severity of physical trauma, and of many internal problems, can be made more precise through the use of an inclinometer which can compare actual range of motion against an accepted norm.
From medicine to construction, and from engineering to aerospace technology, the inclinometer and all of the devices in the inclinometer family, have a varied and diverse portfolio of uses. For ensuring that an angle remains consistent over a distance, and gauging the slope of a large object or checking the list and roll of a ship at sea, few devices offer the compactness and accuracy of an inclinometer.
