When many people think of a data center, they often think of a large warehouse-type building, set at an exact temperature and filled with racks upon racks of servers. This is one type of data center, and it’s a very popular option for small to large business owners. But it’s still just one type of data center and in fact, those same business owners can create their own data centers and maintain them on their own. The one you choose will depend on what you’re looking for, and how big of a role you want to play in the storage of your servers.

A data center is any space that is reserved for and dedicated to the storage of a company’s IT infrastructure that supports their business – both online, and off in many cases. This infrastructure includes not only web servers, but also the equipment that runs application software and that processes and stores content. Some companies may find that they only need one server cage, while companies with much more data to store may need an assortment of racks, cabinets, and different modules to make their space work. Either way, any type of data center needs to be an extremely ...
... controlled environment.

Data centers need to always be kept at a certain temperature and humidity, to ensure that the servers and systems will always function and perform at their fullest capacity. In addition to just keeping the physical environment at optimum conditions, data centers also need to have a tremendous amount of power behind them. Not only do they have to have extremely reliable power systems in place, and capable of running the equipment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but also backup systems that will kick in should the initial systems ever fail. phoenix data center

Due to the important and powerful nature of both the data and equipment stored in data centers, they also need to have the most advanced security technologies put into place. For data this includes things such as the most up-to-date firewalls, the most stringent virus protection, and regular backup of all the data on all the servers. Security measures put into place to protect the actual equipment include things such as smoke and fire alarms, as well as alarms for the area or building.

When businesses don’t have too much equipment or too many servers to store, and when they have the appropriate room to do so, creating and maintaining their own data center can be a cost-effective option that truly gives them full control. However because of the time that maintaining this equipment takes, and the investment that can be required to set the space up in the first place, many businesses find it easier to outsource their data center needs. When doing either, it’s important that you have only the most knowledgeable and experienced IT staff maintaining the space for you.
