With Self-employment, The Question Is To Insure Or Not To Insure?
According to a recent Forbes article, nearly one-third of America’s workforce considers themselves self-employed…an estimated 42 million individuals.
Self-employed people often come up against the same worries: what’s the state of the business? Are the clients going to keep coming back? How do I find time to make sure my financial house is in order? Perhaps chief among the concerns of the self-employed, however, is, do I need health insurance…or can I buy the time and run the risk of getting sick or injured versus the substantial cost of making sure I’m covered?
The answer to that question is always—you need health insurance if you are self-employed. Think about it. No matter how good you feel or how tight your budget may be, you never know when illness or injuries are going to strike. No health insurance is a death sentence to your savings and is not something to be trifled with.
Consider the cost. A simple visit to a doctor without health insurance can cost you upwards of $100. Add to that some tests, x-rays, surgery, etc. and the cost can go much higher. In fact, a procedure like heart valve ...
... replacement hits the six figure mark and doesn’t stop there. And that bill falls on the one having the procedure to pay it off. That can more than cripple someone who is self-employed.
So, you have to ask the question, what’s the best path to health insurance security and cost consciousness for those who work for themselves? Here are some options.
