Seat Leon - The Latin Blood

With a purposeful look in its eye and Latin blood in its veins the new Seat Leon is referred to as VW’s sporting brand. With multi-link rear axle for better wheel control and the struts at the front, it is a previous generation Golf with VW’s latest engines in it. A bit odd thing from Seat is creating three distinct ranges and making them all look different sized versions of the same car is excessive. Sporting credentials of Leon are somewhat hard to believe when it looks so much like MPV themed variations of its sisters.

Leon is only available in five-doors where the rear three quarter windows and the rear door handles sunk into it, gives it almost a coupe like profile. A further step has been taken in Cupra R models with polished black pillars and tinted rear windows that give the impression of an unbroken window-line. It also has 19 inch alloys, different bodywork front and rear, black door mirror casings and twin centre rear exhausts, which makes the connection to Seat’s successful motorsport campaign.

The all-around visibility is made less than adequate in Leon by its ...
... sloping A-pillars, thick C-pillars and narrow rear window. A similar system to Alfa Romeo Mito and Golf GTI is introduced in Leon as the key engineering tweak is a kind of electronic limited-slip differential for the performance models. The looks of Leon may resembles to an Altea MPV but it strictly is a hatch, and it clearly shows how focused Seat is on doing the conventional things in a very well manner, unlike some other cars that tried their best to be terribly clever but ended up disappearing down into the blind alleys. Although the boot is not big enough as compared to its rivals and the rear seat does not do more than split and fold, but the cabin is undoubtedly spacious and airy, provide enough room for four grown adults or parents and a couple of children with their luggage.

The driving position is also very decent with a telescopic steering column and a height-adjustable seat, rest of the seating position is absolutely of a conventional car not as an MPV. A five inch colour touch-screen, clear and easy to use satellite navigation system, DAB radio and fully integrated Bluetooth system that is capable of streaming music wirelessly from an iPhone, all which is available in optional media system. Seat Leon engines are offered as a 1.4-litre petrol engine with 84bhp, but there is another advanced TSI engine line which has a 1.2-litre with 104bhp and 1.2-litre with 123bhp.

In the performance models a 2.0-litre TSI with 208bhp for FR+ and a fire-breathing 2.0-litre TSI with 261bhp for the Cupra R. On the Seat Leon diesel engine front there is a super frugal 1.6-litre TDI with 104bhp, and CO2 emissions as low as 99g/km in fuel sipping EcoMotive specifications, or a 2.0-litre TDI with 138bhp. There is a 2.0-litre TDI with 168bhp especially made for FR+ model. The ride and handling of Seat Leon is as well as Golf’s. the multi-link rear axle really did paid off here for all the investment done by the VW. It corners with absolute assurance, showing exceptional grip in all weathers, and really serving up the ride.
