Today living in a modern world where we have access to any product and service we can hardly imagine times when people did not have it. The progress made its job and today we use fast Internet everywhere in airplanes and trains, we drive hybrid cars, use solar energy, make payments with credit cards and buy cigarettes online. All that is commonplace for us. We live and even do not think about how things that surround us in our everyday life were created. Someone certainly created them. We smoke famous Marlboro cigarettes, but do we know how they have appeared on the tobacco market?

Philip Morris, a cigarette manufacturer from England, in 1902 founded in New York a tobacco company to sell its cigarette brands such as Derby, Cambridge and Marlboro. Do you know what are the origins of the brand name ".Marlboro"?

Marlboro was named after Marlborough street in London where Philip Morris plant was situated on, In 1924 the company launched Marlboro with slogan "Mild as May" which initially was created for ladies. First years Marlboro cigarettes were non-filtered as filters were not created yet.

... were created a series of advertisements depicting female hand and showing that this is a female cigarettes brand. On posters were depicted beautiful ladies with cigarettes but in 1950s they were replaced with babies telling their moms what a magnificent taste Marlboro cigarettes have.

In the times of World War II Marlboro cigarettes brand faltered and had to be taken off the market. In 1942 in Reader's Digest there was published an article named "Cigarette Advertising Fact and Fiction," which told readers about negative effects of smoking and readers found out that all cigarettes brands provide the same damage to health. In 1957 Reader's Digest wrote an article that connected smoking with lung cancer.

Soon Philip Morris introduced new version of Marlboro cigarettes with filters and they were considered absolutely safe for smoker's lungs. It was discovered that it is not easy to quit smoking and the causes of this phenomenon were recognized as nicotine addiction. The tobacco market was full of various cigarettes brands and smokers wanted to try all of them.

When filter cigarettes were created they were prefered by women due to mildness they provided. However, with information about lung cancer caused by smoking, tobacco manufacturers, including Philip Morris, started to provide all their cigarettes with filters as it was considered that filters do purify smoke.
