In industries, the usage of polyurethane dispersion is promoted, as it is known to be the best and the safest substitute for solvent based coatings. These solvent based coatings are eco-friendly in nature. A waterborne dispersion is also termed as PUD.

They are growing rapidly in the polyurethane coating industry and its usage has increased due to some environment legislations. The usage of these coatings has also increased in the industry, due to various technological advances.

These dispersions are made up of fully reacted polyureas, which comprises of small and discrete polymer particles, which ranges from 0.01-5.0 microns in a continuous water phase. They do not have isocyanate residues and consist of zero or a very low level of volatile organic content. They are safe to use and are very good for compliant coating applications.

There are also several uses of these products like-

Diverse kinds of foams are manufactured with this product. The flexible foam is used in the upholstery sector and the rigid foams are used inside the walls of refrigerators and freezers. The foams are also used in ...
... car seats, head rests, and arm rests. Thermal insulation panels are also designed using this product.

The polyurethane consists of mild fibers that can make beautiful stretchable dresses. They are also widely used in electronics, furniture, sealing of cracks, furnishings, flooring, medical applications, and packaging. They are also used as adhesives and in shoe and furniture industry.

The paint made up of PUD is quiet durable and are used to give coatings in garage doors. It is also very elastic when compared to other paints. They can endure extreme sunlight and is not prone to any wear and tear. You can even tint them if you desire. Their functioning is very similar to any other kind of paint. They leave a very hard and glossy finish and they look nice.

The main benefits of these dispersions are-

• They are very flexible and are environment friendly coating materials
• The form of these dispersions varies from hard to solid content.
• They have zero to low volatile organic content, which eases their formulation in the compliant coating for several diverse substrates.
• Their core strength lies in their abrasion resistance quality, impact strength, and low temperature flexibility, which have led to their increased level of usage in industries.

One of the major downside of polyurethane dispersion is they are very expensive. To balance their relatively higher price, they are mixed with other low cost dispersions which also improve their adhesion to some substrates. The PUD dispersions have a life of 10 years even when exposed, as they have high UV resistance against darkening, cracking, or flaking.
