The once quiet Mediterranean fishing village of L'Estartit became transformed almost overnight into a hot and happening tourist destination in the 1960s. This serene seaside backwater is very popular with tourists from all over Europe and the UK. Its scenic and picturesque location, nestling on the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, at the foothills of the Montgri Massif, with the Ter River flowing through, this is one of the prettiest places in Costa Brava.

It has remained unspoiled and unique in spite of the large-scale invasion by tourists and the surrounding hills are home to several small but richly endowed nature parks and protected sanctuaries. The Iles Medes archipelago lies off the coast and this is another wonderful spot for deep-sea diving, snorkeling, scuba and marine-life watching. This is also a protected nature reserve and a wonderful place to visit for those who value the environment and the measures taken to preserve the unique habitat.

The tiny historic center of L'Estartit town is a remarkable witness to the 19th C wealthy migrants who returned from America and built lavish colonial ...
... homes here. The archeology museum, quaint and mysterious back-streets, watch-tower and fisherman's cottages offer truly great photo ops. The 13th C fortress atop Montgri is another must-see location, with the interesting ancient surrounding village and settlements.

Trekking up the Montgri Massif, kayaking or canoeing on the river, diving off the best diving shelf in Catalonia, visiting the Port Aventura film studios, visiting nearby Figueres and the Dali museum here, a quick trip to Barcelona are some of the exciting things you can do here. A day-long boat tour, guided tours in glass-bottomed boats. Nearby Peratalada with its exciting casino housed in a medieval country mansion is another big draw, as is the Figueres which is renowned as the birthplace of Salvador Dali.

The cuisine is typically Mediterranean, with an abundance of fresh seafood, cooking lightly and swiftly, garnished with local spices and healthy cooking mediums, great local wines and cheeses, meats, desserts and special local dishes are some of the gastronomic attractions of L'Estartit.

If you're here in July, you can catch the international music festival. The other great attractions here include the sports marina and the several world-class golf courses in the vicinity.

A range of accommodation to suit every budget and preference is available in L'Estartit. Apartments, condos, private home-stays, hostels, clubs, resorts, hotels, cottages, beach-front houses etc are available. Villas are a very popular holiday option especially with large groups and families.

With some time, patience and effort, you can locate the perfect place in L'Estartit to spend your dream vacation in Costa Brava.
