The once quiet Mediterranean fishing village of L'Estartit became transformed almost overnight into a hot and happening tourist destination in the 1960s. Nearby Peratalada with its exciting casino housed in a medieval country mansion is another big draw, as is the Figueres which is renowned as the birthplace of Salvador Dali.
