There are two kinds of travellers in this world. There are those who have had the experience of a holiday package to Switzlerland, and then there are those who have not. The blunt nature of this classification will be understood fully only by the former kind of traveller, because even though the terms ‘Swiss bank’, ‘Swiss roll’, ‘Swiss cheese’, ‘Swiss knife’, ‘Swiss Alps’ and ‘Swiss chocolate’ have all become routine in the vocabularies of other cultures, they still hold more reason than prudent adventurers should ever need to embark on Switzerland tour packages. After all, there is a considerable difference between eating a bar of Swiss chocolate on your couch at home and eating a bar of Swiss chocolate on a couch in Switzlerland, yes?

Here are some well known Swiss attractions one might well be familiar with, but what one should instead experience in all their authenticity. In Switzlerland itself, that is.

Mount Matterhorn
Nepal is home to Mt. Everest, India is home to Kanchenjunga, Japan to Mt. Fuji, Tanzania to Mt. Kilimanjaro and Switzlerland to Mt. Matterhorn, the Swiss people’s ...
... own towering claim to fame. However it is interesting to note that Mt. Matterhorn is not the highest peak in Switzlerland, unlike the other examples cited, all of which are the highest mountains in their respective countries. Rather, it is Matterhorn’s imposing presence and unique four-faced structure that makes it the popular tourist attraction it is. Interestingly, the highest mountain peak in Switzlerland is named ‘Dufourspitze’; a popular location among trekking enthusiasts.

Swiss Chocolate
You needn’t have a sweet tooth to know about Switzlerland’s chocolate industry. Just as you needn’t be a drinker to know about French wine or American bourbon. Over the years, Swiss chocolatiers have established themselves as masters of their craft, not just in Switzerland but the world over. Now, with the demand for Swiss chocolates increasing exponentially day by day, it does not seem like the Swiss tradition of fine chocolate making is under any threat, and rightfully so!

Skiing in the Swiss Alps
Ski resorts are an ever present, ever growing enterprise in Switzlerland. Not only do the Swiss Alps make for a picturesque setting to pull out those skiis and snowboards, but the soft, clean, almost powder like snow itself is very conducive to action sports of the sort. Be sure to pick the right ski resort, though, as they vary in difficulty, with some being reserved for only the most experienced athletes.

Swiss Cheese
Swiss cheese is the kind that most people know as ‘the cheese with holes in it’. The correct name for it, in fact, is ‘Emmental’, after the Swiss town where the cheese was first made. Like Swiss chocolate, Emmental is available all over the world, with most countries now even manufacturing it themselves using milk derived from local cows. But there are those who believe that such mimicry rejects the legitimacy of the cheese, and choose to sample only the original, Swiss Emmental.

These are only a handful of reasons why a holiday package to Switzerland should be on your list of things to do. And soon. Given the highly developed tourism infrastructure of the country, one is bound to discover more than just chocolates and skiing, so make your plans well in advance. It isn’t for nothing that quintessential Swiss tour packages are among the most coveted by serious travellers.
