Let's face it, everyone says that they make the best barbecue sauce and being the best is just a matter of personal preference. Each region has a sauce base that is preferred by them. You've heard of the Carolina BBQ sauce, or the Kansas City style sauce, and if you want to go International you can find the Korean BBQ and the British BBQ sauces are just as tasty. The truth is that Barbecue sauces come with all sorts of flavors, tastes, bases, and thicknesses. In spite of that there are a few basics that apply to all homemade barbecue sauces that will get you started down the right path to that perfect sauce to impress your family and friends.

First, let's start with the obvious. Every sauce starts out the same way, with a base. Most people will use the standard base of ketchup or tomato puree as their foundation. But a more creative sauce artisan will try some other ingredients to start with. Don't be afraid to think outside of the box. Some have tried Mayonnaise, mustard, honey, or other ingredients of the required thickness to produce the right sauce. From there you can add your own personal choice of ingredients to enhance the taste and bring that zing that usually is found in most BBQ sauces. Some use sweeteners like sugar and molasses or even pineapple or orange juice to bring out the unique and exotic flavors that are associated with BBQ sauce.

The truth is that there are no hard and fast rules about BBQ sauce. It sums up to you, choose a base and your choice of sweeteners and flavorings. No matter what your taste preferences are when it comes to homemade BBQ sauce you can be as creative as you want to be. There are already many different types of sauces in the market today but nothing will ever be better than your own homemade sauces when it comes to pleasing your family and friends.
