Bareilly (earlier known as Sanjashya) is a city in the Bareilly district of the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Situated on the banks of Ramganga River, this bustling city is about 252 km from Lucknow and 250 km from New Delhi. Jagat Singh Katehriya founded Bareilly in 1537. This city is also known as Bans Bareilly. Bareilly is a major trading centre of cotton, cereal and sugar.

Bareilly has a significant place in the history of Indian struggle for Independence. The great epic Mahabharata mentions Bareilly as the birthplace of the legendary figure Draupadi.

Bareilly is known far and wide for its ancient temples. Alakha Nath, Trivati Nath, Madhi Nath and Dhopeshwar Nath are the four Nath (Shiva) temples in Bareilly situated on the four corners of the city. Because of these temples, Bareilly is also known as Nath Nagri.

Some of the other ancient centres of religious importance in Bareilly are Tapeshwar Nath Temple, Kanker Kuan Nath, Jagannath Temple, Tulsi Math, Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Bara Bagh Hanuman Mandir,and Sai Mandir.

Radha Madhav Sankirtan Mandal, has its head quarters in Bareilly. The world renowned International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is constructing a big temple in Bareilly.

Bareilly is noted for the Dargah of Ahmed Raza Khan Fazil-e-Barelvi (1856–1921 CE), whose Razwi Silsila of Sufism is famous worldwide. This Dargah is also known as "Bareilly Shareef".

Bareilly is home to Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), India's premier advanced research facility in the field of veterinary medicine and allied branches. Central Avian Research Institute (CARI) established in 1979 is in Bareilly.

Fun City Boond Amusement and Water Park located on Pilibhit By-pass Road in Bareilly attracts a lot of visitors. With state of the art entertainment facilities and adventure rides, this is considered as the biggest Amusement and Water Park in Uttar Pradesh.

The Clara Swain Hospital founded by Dr. Clara Swain in the early 1870s is located in Bareilly. This Hospital is the "oldest and largest Methodist hospital in India".

The army Service Corps Museum and the Panchala Museum are the two famous museums in Bareilly which are worth visiting. The Ramnagar Fort, located around 25 km from Bareilly is a popular tourist destination. The Bareilly Bazaar is very famous among tourists and offers a wonderful shopping experience.

Bareilly is well-connected with the rest of India by road and rail. Six railway stations serve the city of Bareilly. Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi is the nearest International airport to Bareilly. Pantnagar airport, about 70 km north of Bareilly, is the nearest domestic airport with flights only to New Delhi.
